Selecting tiles for your renovation can seem overwhelming for some. So, I wanted to share my tips on how to choose the right tiles for your project.
Design Style
Hopefully before you head off tile shopping, you’ve got an idea of the overall style you want for the space. Whether its modern, classic, rustic or contemporary there will be a wide range of tile design, colours and textures to suit your look.
Tile Material
There are various types of tiles like ceramic, porcelain, natural stone, glass and more and each has its own characteristics and suitable applications. For example porcelain tiles are more durable and water resistant and therefore better for bathrooms and kitchens. If you’re not sure what you need, speak to an expert.
Tile Size
The size of the tiles can impact the visual appearance of the room. Larger tiles can create a sense of openness and make a small room appear more spacious. Smaller tiles, on the other hand, can add intricate details and become a feature for a space. I like to chat with my tiler in advance to understand what size will be most economical for the space. Large slab tiles are heavy and can cost more to install due to their weight.
Grout Colour

Alternatively, a contrasting grout colour can highlight the individual tiles and patterns. I find when using a coloured tile, choosing a white grout can back the depth of colour off nicely.
Consider Lighting
The lighting in the room can influence how the tile appears. If the space lacks natural light, lighter-coloured tiles can help brighten it up, while darker tiles may add warmth to a well-lit room. If you want to add light into a space, consider using some light coloured gloss tiles that will help bounce the light around.
Texture and Slip Resistance
For areas prone to moisture, like bathrooms and kitchens, it's essential to choose tiles with adequate slip resistance. Textured tiles or those with matte finishes can provide better traction, reducing the risk of slipping. This is particularly important when dealing with wet areas or external areas. Again check with an expert to make sure they are suitable for the use.
Longevity and Maintenance
Consider the durability and maintenance requirements of the tiles. Natural stone tiles may require more upkeep than ceramic or porcelain tiles. Think about how much time and effort you are willing to invest in cleaning and maintaining the tiles.
Samples and Mock-ups
Always ask for tile samples and create mock-ups to see how the tiles look in your space before making a final decision. This will help you visualize how the tiles will interact with the lighting, furniture, and other elements in the room. Most tile stores are happy to give you samples. You may have to pay $5 or $10 which is usually refundable if you're happy to return them.
Budget
Set a budget for your tile project and try to find tiles that fit within your price range. Remember to consider not just the cost of the tiles themselves but also the installation costs.
